Ep 119- Why Binge Urges Get Worse Before They Get Better
May 21, 2026
You've been trying so hard to stop bingeing.
But somehow it feels like the urges are getting more intense, not less.
What if that strong binge urge you’re feeling right now… is actually a sign that it’s working?
Today you will learn…
The psychology of binge urges and why they intensify right after you decide to change
A simple mindset shift that makes urges feel less scary and overwhelming
How to respond to an urge in a way that actually rewires your brain over time
Why Your Urges Suddenly Feel Stronger
A few weeks ago, I went through a breakup and decided to go no contact.
About a week later, I felt this overwhelming urge to call him. It genuinely felt unbearable. My thoughts were consumed with him and I kept feeling like I needed to hear his voice.
What stood out to me was how similar it felt to binge urges.
That same desperation, obsession, urgency, and feeling of “I need this right now.”
But something changed when I didn’t act on the urge.
As the hours and days passed, the craving slowly started fading. My brain started rewiring itself because I stopped reinforcing the habit.
That is exactly what happens with binge eating too.
Your Brain Is Trying to Keep the Habit Alive
When you repeat a behavior enough times, your brain creates a neural pathway for it.
Your brain learns:
Urge → binge → temporary relief
So when you suddenly stop binge eating, your brain doesn’t immediately understand why the usual solution isn’t happening anymore.
Instead, it turns up the volume. Food feels more urgent, cravings feel emotional and consuming, and your brain starts trying even harder to convince you to binge.
Not because you’re failing. Because your brain is testing whether you still want the habit.
Think of It Like a Tantrum
It’s like a toddler screaming louder after you take away a toy.
The tantrum usually gets worse right before it settles down.
Binge urges work the same way.
What Happens When You Don’t Act on the Urge
Every time you sit through an urge without binging, your brain stops reinforcing the old pathway.
Over time, the urges become less intense, the space between urges gets longer, and food stops feeling so consuming. The habit slowly loses power.
The discomfort is temporary. But the rewiring is permanent.
Ask Yourself: “And Then What?”
One of the most powerful things you can do during an urge is play the story forward.
Okay, you binge.
And then what?
Usually you feel worse physically, emotionally drained, and frustrated that you reinforced the cycle again.
Now ask the opposite.
What happens if you sit through the discomfort?
Maybe tonight feels hard. But tomorrow feels easier. You feel proud of yourself, the habit weakens, and you build trust with yourself again.
That is productive discomfort.
You Are Not Going to Die From an Urge
I know urges can feel overwhelming.
Your brain starts telling stories like:
“I need this.”
“I can’t handle this feeling.”
“I’ll feel better if I just binge.”
But urges rise, peak, and fall.
They always pass if you give them enough time and space.
And every single time you sit with an urge instead of acting on it, you are teaching your brain:
I can handle discomfort without escaping into food.
That is how recovery happens.
The Breakthrough Usually Happens Right After the Hardest Part
If your urges feel especially strong right now, that does not mean something is wrong with you.
It may actually mean your brain is finally starting to let go of the habit.
The urge to binge is often strongest right before the pathway starts weakening.
So instead of panicking when the cravings get louder, try reminding yourself:
This means my brain is changing.
Because healing your relationship with food is not about never having urges again.
It’s about becoming someone who no longer has to obey them.
